Illustration: Mythic Creature

Dragons and phoenixes, sphinxes and selkies: every culture has imagined beings that are more than animals, each embodying a different kind of soul. Which one is yours?

You will step into a series of short, mythic scenes and choose what you would do, and rate a few statements about yourself. Answer with your gut rather than your strategy: the creature that answers is the one that already lives in you.

What it measures

Courage

Boldness in the face of danger, and the will to stand and fight for what matters.

Low: You avoid needless danger and prefer other paths to proving yourself.

High: You meet danger head-on and are quick to defend.

Wisdom

Patience, insight and the hunger to understand before acting.

Low: You trust action and instinct more than long reflection.

High: You seek understanding and see beneath the surface.

Mystery

High: You keep your depths private and enjoy being hard to read.

Freedom

The need to roam, to stay untamed and to answer to no one.

Low: You love roots, home and a settled place.

High: You love jokes, tricks and lightness.

Transformation

Openness to change, rebirth and reinventing yourself.

Kindness, peace and the instinct to heal rather than to fight.

Low: You lead with strength rather than softness.

About this test

Every culture has dreamed up creatures that are more than animals: beings that embody courage, cunning, wisdom, longing or rebirth. This test draws twelve of them from many traditions, among them Greek and Egyptian myth (the phoenix, the sphinx, Pegasus), the art of the ancient Near East and Greece (the griffin), Chinese and Japanese folklore (the qilin and the nine-tailed fox), the sea stories of northern Europe (the selkie and the kraken) and Jewish folklore (the golem). We have tried to describe each with respect for the tradition it comes from; where a creature is linked to living religious practice, it appears here as a symbol of character, not as an object of belief.

The test measures eight underlying qualities: courage, wisdom, mystery, freedom, loyalty, playfulness, transformation and gentleness, mostly through imaginative scenarios plus a few statements. Each creature has a typical profile across these qualities, and your result is the creature whose profile lies closest to yours; the runners-up show your other mythic kin.

This is a playful, symbolic test, not a scientific instrument. The creature profiles are interpretations of rich and varied legends, and scores are relative to the range of possible answers rather than to population norms. Enjoy it as a story about yourself.
